GOLDEN INSIDER TIPS

Big, bigger, biggest in Vietnam!

Rene Vertonghen • Oct 07, 2019
With more than 3,000 kilometers of coastline, pristine beaches, thriving cities, mountainous highlands and various cultural and historical places, Vietnam is one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world. Since 2010 the number of international tourists has tripled from 5 million to more than 15 million in 2018. At the World Travel Awards 2018 Vietnam was for the first time named as "Asia’s Leading Destination". Vietnam is booming.

Not only the number of tourists in Vietnam is growing every year, the attractions are also getting bigger and bigger!

Han Son Doong Cave

The largest cave in the world

Since 2009 the Han Son Doong cave in Vietnam is internationally known as the largest cave in the world. The cave in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is immense: it has a river, its own tropical rainforest and it is so deep that an apartment building would fit in.

However, the cave is extremely difficult to reach. This is only possible per multi-day expedition, including a guide, tents and more. Take into account very high prices and overcrowded bookings. Fortunately, the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a gigantic surface of 885 square kilometers with hundreds of caves and you can make fantastic jungle tours through the rain forest. An unmissable "off the beaten track" destination!

This remarkable park is located in the central region of Vietnam not far from the cities of Dong Hoi and Hue.

Son Tay Buddha

The largest Buddha of Vietnam and surroundings

Measured at 72 meters high, the Buddha statue at Khai Nguyen pagoda will become one of the biggest Buddha statues in Southeast Asia. The construction of the statue was started in 2015 and will be completed in a few years.

Son Tay is located 43 km west of the center of Hanoi.

Cao Dai Temple

The largest sect of Vietnam

The three main religions in Vietnam are Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. About 2 million Vietnamese, especially in the south of the country, are followers of Caodaism. It is a mix of religions with Taoist and Buddhist rites, the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, the idea of reincarnation from Buddhism and Hinduism. Moreover, they have unusual saints like Victor Hugo, Jeanne d'Arc, Shakespeare, Napoleon Bonaparte and Winston Churchill.

You can visit the Cao Dai Temple "Holy See" in Tay Ninh, about an hour and a half drive northwest of Ho Chi Minh City.

Golden Bridge

The most spectacular bridge

This spectacular attraction was only opened to the public in June 2018. The Golden Bridge is located at an altitude of 1,400 meters above sea level and was built to attract (even) more tourists. What makes the bridge attractive for tourists and locals is its unusual support system: two giant concrete hands reaching toward the sky.

The 'Golden Bridge' is located near the Vietnamese city of Da Nang, on the east coast of the country in the hills of Ba Na.
