Off-the-beaten-track adventures in Myanmar

René Vertonghen • Jan 25, 2020
Most people stick to the typical touristy destinations in Myanmar such as Bagan, Inle Lake, and Yangon. But this amazing country has so much more to offer for the adventurous traveler! So read these off-the-beaten-track adventures.

Zee O Village

Visit local village Zee O, about 12 kilometers off the main Bagan-Kyaukpadaung Highway (45-minute drive from Bagan). It is famous for “A Sacred Forest” of 16 hectares covered with over 600 Ingyinn trees (Shorea Siamensis), tamarind trees of several thousands of years.

You get a glimpse of a typical Myanmar village, the palm sugar production and the traditional way of rural life.  As a highlight of the trip you enjoy a local village lunch under the big tamarind tree.

Gokteik Viaduct

The Gokteik Viaduct is the largest railway trestle in the world upon its completion in 1900 and it is also the highest bridge in Myanmar. It is located in northern Shan Sate, about 60 miles (100 Km) northeast of Mandalay, the last royal capital of Burma.

This structure of steel trestle construction for rail way line began in 1899 and completed in 1900 and opened to public in 1903. Due to its technical and natural condition it's considered as a masterpiece of the world standard.

Mogok (Ruby Land)

Mogok is famous for its natural beauty and for the gem stone mines, located 1170m above sea level and surrounded by mountains. It is interesting to see how gravels are exploited by means of tunneling, pit-digging, grinding, soughting and panning which shows daily life and ways of living of Mogok natives.

Also Nepail and Lahu hill tribes live here. Panchan Htar Pwe gems market is busy with buyers and sellers that check their gem stones. Walk up the mountain and enjoy the beautiful sunset. You'll have a wonderful panoramic view of the sun going down slowly behind the mountains.
